AND THOSE HEARTS LEAPT!

A crooked stick, a puck and a frozen pond - that’s all one ever really needed for the best sport in the world. Since on the Ritten mountain there’s always been plenty of all of it, it should be of no surprise that in 1925, 50 years after the world’s very first ice hockey in 1875, this fabulous sport finally conquered our hearts. Once winter settled in on our little plateau mountain, hockey buffs would come together at the local pond Wolfsgrubner See. At last in 1928, the Sport Club Renon was founded. And yes, the rest is history.

Our success story begins in the year 1929, when our „Buam“ (local dialect for “boys”) participate in the Italian Championship for the first time. Soon the pond would no longer be enough and shortly after World War II in 1975 Ritten celebrates its first title. The team wins the Italian Division B Championship and moves to Division A, the highest league in Italy, where it will remain for the following 2 years.

Up until the 1984, Ritten has 3 different teams – SC Ritten, HC Unterinn and WSV Rittnerhorn –all of them in different leagues. In 1984, the 3 teams join forces and form the Sportverein Ritten. 1986 Ritten wins Division B again, defeating HC Como by one goal, thus rising to the first division once again. However, the Division A adventure does not last long. Two years later, Ritten drops back down to the second division. 1999 Ritten wins the Division B Championship for the third time in the club’s history.

Since 2004, we have been playing in Italy’s highest league as Rittner Buam (“Ritten Boys”), placing a lot of our focus on our very own homegrown talent. In 2009, a consistent youth development program would finally bear its fruits. For the first time in the club’s history we beat HC Bozen in the finals of the Supercoppa Trophy. During the 2009-2010 season, we celebrate important achievements: two Trophy titles, the Supercoppa and the Coppa Italia. In the Championship finals however, we lose to one of our strongest opponents, Asiago. Oh, and by the way, we make it to the finals 4 times in 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2010 before we are finally able to call the title ours.

The year 2014 will forever remain in our hearts – we finally overcome the curse of second place. For the first time in history, Ritten ends the season as Italy’s Division A Champion. We also in the Coppa Italia during the seasons 2014 and 2015. In 2015, Asiago defeats us again in the league championship finals.

2016 - The Boys strike back! After a white knuckling final against HC Pustertal, Ritten does it again and wins the first division championship. The season of 2016 - 2017 marks a new beginning for our club. Along with 15 other teams from three different countries, the Boys enter the newly founded Alps Hockey League, the AHL. During this season the Buam continue to shine: after a thrilling semi-final, they make their way into the Super Final of the Continental Cup in 2017. The Buam win their third Italian championship title, and celebrate a historic victory: we are the first champions of the newly founded Sky Alps Hockey League AHL.

The ending to this success story is not written yet: 2018 The team wins the Suppercoppa in Milano, and a thrilling championship final against Asiago brings the Italian Championship Title home for the 4th time!

The season 2019/20 starts by winning another trophy. In September the Buam win their 5th Supercoppa against SV Kaltern.
